The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) have compiled new regulations ahead of next year’s parliamentary elections to allow members of Maldives Democratic Alliance (MDA) and Maldives National Party (MNP) to run in the PPM/PNC primary election.

The joint governing parties, PPM and PNC, opened applications for the primary election on Thursday while releasing a special regulation for the election as well.

The regulation states that members from their coalition parties that wish to run in the parliamentary election of 2024 have the opportunity to run for candidacy in their primary election. According to the agreement between the MNP, MDA, and the ruling parties, coalition members can run in the primary election.

Even though the regulation did not provide further details, President of MNP and parliamentarian for the Dhangethi constituency Mohamed Nazim has said in a previous MNP meeting that this was how the agreement was made.

He said if members from all four parties wish to run for one constituency in the parliamentary election, only one primary will be held between these candidates. The winning candidate will be endorsed by all the parties in the coalition, he said.

However, according to the regulation published on Thursday, it is the PPM and PNC leadership that is organizing the elections. The committee for the election is comprised of members from these two parties as well.

The primary election is set to be held on January 20. Interested candidates can apply between December 20 to December 31. Only candidates that had registered in the two parties prior to Monday, December 11, can participate in the election.
