An abandoned newborn has been discovered in a garbage dump on Alif Dhaalu atoll Dhigurah.
The incident was reported to the police around 9:20 am. Following an examination by a doctor, the child was pronounced deceased, according to the police.
"A police team has been dispatched to the island in connection with the case," the police said.
Ibrahim Usman, President of the island council, told 'Mihaaru News' that the baby was discovered at around 8 am when an employee at the island's waste disposal facility was at work.
"The baby was found in a black dustbin bag," he said.
Usam said that he could not provide further details as the case was under investigation by the police.
