Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has criticized some candidates contending the presidential election for their "autocratic" statements.

Although he explicitly did not name any specific candidate, Maumoon expressed his concerns via a tweet about some presidential candidates pledging to immediately begin or cease certain conduct.

Eight candidates are taking part in this year's presidential election scheduled for September 9, each unveiling their policies and making pledges for their potential five-year term in office.

"Where is the law? Where is due process?" Former president Maumoon questioned certain candidates who have made pledges to immediately halt specific activities.

This year's presidential election features Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih seeking re-election, People’s National Congress (PNC) candidate and Malé City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim, The Democrats’ candidate Ilyas Labeeb, Maldives National Party (MNP) leader Mohamed Nazim, and three independent candidates including former minister of home affairs Umar Naseer, former deputy minister of defense Hassan Zameel, and Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) leader Faris Maumoon.
