The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has said that the flooding on the reconstructed parts of Ameenee Magu was caused because the construction work has not been entirely completed on the road.

The government, as well as the RDC, came under public scrutiny this morning after photos and videos of the heavy flooding in the newly developed and recently opened part of Ameenee Magu circulated on social media.

An official from RDC who spoke to Mihaaru News said the flood was caused because the road has not been completed yet. He added that once completed, the road will not remain flooded for long, even after heavy rainfall.

"The stormwater drainage system will be completely installed when the road is fully developed. By the time the project is completed, we will have installed pumps and upgraded the drainage system," the official said.

The road redevelopment project includes laying asphalt over a length of 1.7 kilometres and installing a stormwater drainage system.

Ameenee Magu gets heavily flooded during the rainy season, making it difficult for the public to travel.

The reconstructed portions of the road were opened to the public on Sunday, March 6. Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) laid asphalt from the easternmost point of the road connecting Boduthakurufaanu Magu up to the main headquarters of State Electric Company (STELCO).
