Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) procured 13 buses to commence public transportation in Fuvahmulah island and Addu atoll in the south of the Maldives.
Speaking at a ceremony held at MPL on Monday, the company’s CEO Mohamed Junaid stated that the 13 buses are currently in capital Male’s Commercial Harbour. The vehicles will be unloaded within one or two days.
He disclosed that the acquisition had cost approximately USD 800,000 (MVR 12 million).
Meanwhile, MPL has released a notice seeking a contractor to transport the buses to Fuvahmulah and Addu. Junaid assured that transportation will be completed soon.
“Special procedures are required for their transportation via landing crafts,” he stated in response to a reporter’s inquiry.
Public transportation had previously been provided in the two southernmost atolls by the private firm MVK Maldives, before its service had eventually terminated. Following the cessation, the government had tasked state-run MPL with recommencing public transportation in Fuvahmulah and Addu.
