Police confirmed on Wednesday that all twelve protestors taken under custody on Tuesday night during a protest by opposition coalition were released.

As per the spokesperson of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC), Heena Waleed, nine people were taken to police custody from the "Two in One" protest.

However, police media stated 12 people were taken to police custody. They were all released after fining for going against the restrictive measures placed by Health Protection Agency (HPA) to control the spread of COVID-19.

Supporters gathered in front of the PPM office to call for the release of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom who is serving a five-year jail sentence for money laundering crimes during his tenure. When the time to start the protest neared, police barricaded the area, blocking all roads to the PPM office.

Following this, the protestors gathered at Majeedhee Magu and raised their concerns. Police split this gathering up as well.

The opposition coalition released a press statement in which they claimed that the police had no legal ground to stop the "Two in One" protest. It further claimed that the right to protest and assemble is a constitutional right, hence, the police went violated this by arresting the protestors. The press release also noted the police used force doing this.
