UN Resident Coordinator for Maldives and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Representative Shoko Noda, on Sunday, paid a farewell call on President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at the President’s Office.

During the meeting, President Solih acknowledged and expressed his appreciation for UNDP's continued work to promote the country's socio-economic development over the past several decades.

Furthermore, he particularly thanked Noda for the initiative and passion she brought to UNDP’s work in Maldives during her four-year tenure.

In response, she thanked the president and noted that the country was now on a positive trajectory in terms of consolidating rights and freedoms guaranteed in the 2008 Constitution. According to Noda, the future of Maldivian democracy appeared bright.

She also spoke in agreement with several of the government’s prioritization of areas such as decentralization, women’s empowerment and economic development. Noda reiterated that the UNDP team, led by her successor, would always be prepared to aid the government in its development plans.

Additionally, she congratulated President Solih on his electoral success as well as the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s attainment of a parliamentary majority. Noting that the latter revealed strong public support for the administration’s legislative agenda, Noda added that the composition of the nineteenth parliament would allow the government to fully deliver on all of its pledges.

Ending the meeting, Noda expressed satisfaction at having worked in Maldives, which she stated was a second home to her in several aspects. She expressed hopes that she would be able to visit frequently after leaving her post on April 30. The president reciprocated her sentiments and reiterated his appreciation for Noda’s numerous contributions to the country and wished her success in all her future endeavours.
