A group of technical experts from the Ministry of Power, India, recently visited the Maldives to evaluate the technology needed to connect the two countries through Lakshadweep for the purpose of exchanging renewable energy.

The aim of the One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSOWOG) project is to evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of interconnecting regional power grids. To guide the work of the task force, it was decided to first explore interconnection with Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and the Maldives.

In April of last year, the Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology, Aminath Shauna, met with India's Power Minister, Raj Kumar Singh, and discussed the power grid and potential implementation strategies.

On December 27, the Ministry of Power in India issued a statement revealing that a technical team had visited the Maldives the previous year to assess the feasibility of exchanging renewable energy through an interconnected power grid, although no further details about the study were shared.

Minister Shauna stated that a report will be released outlining the increased cooperation in renewable energy and the process of connecting the Maldives to the source network.

The Task Force had conducted a study on the technical and economic feasibility of interconnecting regional grids, including South East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East (Gulf Cooperation Council), Africa, and Europe. However, for the initial connection, only a select few countries were explored for implementation, including the Maldives.
