Committee seeks assistance to counteract religious strife

The committee established to safeguard Islamic faith has decided to seek assistance from the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) and Police Intelligence to counteract the rising issue of religious disharmony.

The President’s Office stated that aid was being sought from the two institutions in order to act against the increasing number of blasphemous acts and criticisms levelled against Islam on social media.

The decision to collaborate with NCTC and Police Intelligence was made during the committee’s first meeting.

As stated in the manifesto of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, it was concluded in the committee meeting that there would be no space for brutality and religious turmoil among society in accordance with the constitution of the Maldives.

The President formed the committee based on the counsel of his Cabinet, amidst the recent upsurge of social media posts which mock and insult Islam, its holy scripture Quran and the Prophet Muhammad.

The committee comprises of:

- Vice President, Faisal Naseem

- Minister of Defence, Mariya Ahmed Didi

- Minister of Home Affairs, Imran Abdulla

- Minister of Higher Education, Dr Ibrahim Hassan

- Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Ahmed Zahir

- Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Ahmed Mahloof

- Chief of Staff at the President's Office, Ali Zahir

Furthermore, the President’s Office had stated that it is a function of the committee to decide immediate and long term measures against religious strife.
