Elections Commission (EC) has stated today that it will take due action against any persons found to be infringing upon the electoral rights of other candidates when conducting campaign activities for the upcoming parliamentary election.

A statement released by the Commission today noted that they have observed acts of anti-campaigning, and that some banners and posters being used in the campaigns are also bearing messages that may be detrimental to the electoral rights of other candidates.

The Commission reminded that it is prohibited under the General Elections Act to conduct any activity that may infringe upon an electoral right of a candidate or to spread misinformation about any candidates.

EC advised all contenders to abide by these disciplinary guidelines.

Human Rights Commission of Maldives has also highlighted this issue and released a statement yesterday, calling on relevant authorities to step up and take necessary action.
