President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom vowed to complete the terminal at Kulhudhufushi Airport by the end of 2018, on Friday.
While speaking at the Kulhudhuffushi Airport inauguration ceremony, the President predicted that, as a terminal would require less work, the construction would be complete before the end of the year.
Continuing his speech amidst heavy rain, the president said that the main aspect of northern development would become Kulhudhufushi Airport and that soon, additional airports would be developed in the area.
In addition, the President pledged to built guesthouses on the island to kick-start local tourism, declaring that during a second term he would ensure that the area boasted a capacity of 3000 beds.
Currently, Kulhudhufushi airport's runway expands up to 1,200 feet and has 30 meters in width.
Although the airport was inaugurated on Friday, thus far the runway is one of the only aspects completed. The development of Kulhudhuffushi Airport is one of President Yameen's main pledges from his 2013 election campaign.
Civil Aviation has revealed that scheduled flights to the airport, are set to commence soon.
