Normalization Committee tasked with investigating misplaced FAM funds

The Normalization Committee assigned to manage the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has been tasked with investigating the loss of funds received by the football association from FIFA and AFC following fraud allegations surrounding its former governance.

The Normalization Committee assigned to manage the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has been tasked with investigating the loss of funds received by the football association from FIFA and AFC following fraud allegations surrounding its former governance.

FIFA appointed former Sports Minister Ahmed Zuhoor as Chairperson of the Normalization Committee on Monday and handed over the running of FAM to the committee.

FIFA also notified Acting General Secretary Mohamed Jaushan Shareef on Monday that the Normalization Committee will be leading the association effective immediately.

A statement disclosed by FAM afterwards detailed the responsibilities mandated over the committee by FIFA.

Responsibilities of the Normalization Committee

1. Day-to-day running of the football association

2. Ensure FAM's governing framework and electoral code are revised and enforced according to FIFA statutes

3. Coordinate with Maldivian courts system to look into recovery of funds provided by FIFA and AFC to FAM

4. Coordinate with the External Financial Consultant appointed by FIFA to devise a plan for tackling the association's debt crises

5. Coordinate with the External Financial Consultant to enforce articles in the FIFA Forensic Audit Report

6. Make arrangements for a re-election according to a new and revised governing framework

Members of FAM Normalization Committee

Five members have been appointed to the committee through interviews conducted by a FIFA and AFC panel. The governing bodies ensured those appointed to assume assigned responsibilities are experts in the fields of law, finance and also management.

Fareeha Shareef, the female member of the committee has expertise in the field of accounting and finance. Also having previously served as the Chairperson of Bank of Maldives (BML), Fareeha is among the founders of Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Maldives which aims to regulate and advance the accountancy profession in the island nation.

FIFA also instated former Prosecutor General of Maldives, Ahmed Muizzu into the committee.

Ahmed Ali, also a committee member is a Tax Partner of the Maldivian law firm, S&A Lawyers LLP and had previously worked at Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) as its Assistant Commissioner General.

Another member appointed to committee, Ismail Siman is also a law practitioner who has experience in finance.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Committee, Zuhoor is widely acknowledged as an expert in public administration and management.

The normalization committee's term is set to end on July 31, 2025, however, is subject to extension if their mandates remain uncompleted.
