The airport being constructed in Faafu Atoll Magoodhoo has been handed over to Regional Airports Company for operation.
Regional Airports have confirmed that they have signed an agreement with the Finance Ministry, in which the company is granted authority to oversee all operations of the Magoodhoo Airport.
Regional Airports revealed that the airport, being constructed by MTCC, is a project costing MVR 200 million. While initially the plan was to construct a 1200 meter runway at the airport, it is now being extended to a 1800 meter runway on the direction of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The company stated that work has reached completion on both the fire building and the passenger terminal of the airport, and currently finishing work is being undertaken.
A parking area for jets, as well as a jet fuel farm are included in the plans. Work on these areas will reach completion during the first quarter of 2024, according to the company.
The project also includes the establishment of a hotel to accommodate jet crew members.
The company stated that if work goes according to the schedule, the airport can begin its operations in January next year.
Regional Airports also said that the airport being constructed in Meemu Atoll Muli will also reach completion and be operational during the first quarter of the coming year.
