Mohamed "OK" Zahir, a veteran businessman and political figure passed away last night at the age of 76.
He was receiving treatment at Asiri Hospital in Sri Lanka following a prolonged illness.
Zahir served as the Chief Executive Officer of Thilafushi Corporation Limited (TCL) during former President Mohamed Nasheed's administration.
He was also instrumental in the formation of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the largest political party in the Maldives, and played an active role in Minivan Bahus (Independent debate) from 2004. Zahir served as the MDP's Laamu atoll Fonadhoo constituency president.
In recognition of his contributions to economic development, Zahir was awarded the National Award for Public Service in 1993.
As a businessman, he was known for his diverse economic ventures, including the manufacture of washing powder and air fresheners in the Maldives. He also exported fish and fish products, including sea cucumber.
Zahir is survived by his wife and nine children.
