Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Maldives said on Monday that aground bulk carrier Navio Amaryllis has already damaged Rasfaree reef.

The bulk carrier registered to Panama is 189.99 meter (623.23 feet) long with carrying capacity of 58,735 tons. The ship ran aground in Rasfaree reef on Thursday due to engine failure while it was en route to South Africa from India.

Director of EPA Riffath Naeem told Mihaaru news that the detail of the damages can only be determined after thorough diving in the area, which can only be conducted after the ship has been refloated.

Riffath said a team from EPA has been monitoring the reef everyday since the incident. Photos taken show that the reef has already suffered many damages.

He said areas of the reef has been destroyed and the delays in refloating the bulk carrier will only result in it to be lodged deeper in the reef.

Maldives lack the equipment to refloat the ship. Antarc Maldives, the local agent representing Navio Amaryllis, has previously said a tug boat from Sri Lanka will reach Maldives on Monday to refloat the ship.

No substances has yet been released from the ship that will be harmful to the environment, Transport Authority of Maldives that has inspected the site, has said.
