Ahmed Agil (Ammadey) has been appointed captain of the national surfing team.
The team's first tournament under his captaincy will be the Asian Surfing Championships, set to take place next month in his home island of Kaafu atoll Thulusdhoo.
Agil has an impressive track record, having competed in numerous surfing tournaments and winning the Dhivehi Surf League championship in 2022, held in Meemu atoll Muli. Following that victory, he advanced in the surfing rankings.
Maldives Surfing Association stated that Agil's appointment as captain was based on his performance and consultations with other surfers.
Last year, Agil reached the second round of the Surfing World Championships held in El Salvador.
In a previous interview, Agil shared that his family initially discouraged him from pursuing surfing as a career due to concerns about low income from the sport.
"My mother used to dislike it. But now my two biggest supporters are my mother and wife," he said.
"When she found out about me receiving Red Bull's sponsorship, she believed that surfing can provide a good income. Now everyone believes it."
