MWSC (Male' Water and Sewerage Company) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today with Floation, a Norwegian company, to conduct a study on establishing an underwater water production system.
The MoU was signed at a ceremony held at MWSC by Managing Director of MWSC, Abdul Matheen Mohamed, and Managing Director of Flocean, Alexander Fuglesang.
According to MWSC, this study will gather the technical information needed to establish an underwater RO desalination system, conduct necessary underwater surveys, and assess its environmental impact. The study will also include preparing financial estimates related to water production from this system.
MWSC will provide information and technical documents for this study and assist in obtaining necessary permits from government ministries and other agencies. They will also provide the support needed to carry out this work in the Maldives.
MWSC stated that as the Maldives is an island nation, if such a system can be established based on this study, it would be able to produce and store water to meet the country's growing water demand. If implemented, this system would solve space constraints for establishing water production facilities and reduce energy consumption and costs associated with current water production methods.
MWSC also mentioned that this study would contribute to addressing climate change issues, energy policies, and achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. They described it as an environmentally friendly and sustainable project for safe water production and distribution, which would bring social and economic benefits.
