An elderly man of Raa atoll Dhuvaafaru island suffered serious injury to one eye after a young man threw chemical in his face.

Ibrahim Mohamed, 71, was attacked on his way to the mosque for dawn prayers early Tuesday. He was brought to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in capital Male the same day for emergency treatment.

According to IGMH, his right eye has been damaged by the chemical. The possibility of his eyesight returning in that eye can only be determined after the bandages are removed.

“There isn’t much damage to his face. He’s currently admitted in the ward,” said the hospital’s spokesperson, assuring that his condition is no longer serious.

Police is yet to arrest anyone over this attack.

Dhuvaafaru Island Council stated that the reason behind the attack on Ibrahim Mohamed is still unclear. They described him as a well-mannered and religious man.

This is the second such attack over the past few months. A woman of Shaviyani atoll Lhaimagu island had had bleach thrown in her face when she opened the door of her house after dawn prayers two months ago. Police had arrested two suspects over the case.
