Maldives Police Service has begun investigating a case from a southern atoll island involving the pregnancy of a rape victim.

The authority received the report on Friday, October 6 after which it began investigating the case, but refrained from revealing additional details.

Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services said it had begun making arrangements to ensure safety of the victim.

The mother of the victim meanwhile, has alleged negligence of relevant authorities in investigating her daughter's case.

According to the mother, her 15 year old daughter was raped by a group men local to the island.

She said the culpable individuals had informed her after a botched abortion attempt, after which reported the incident to the police.

"I went straight to the police station and gave my statement," the victim's mother said.

She said that, despite providing the statement, the police had been uncooperative.

"Both me and my child were taken by in a police speedboat, but there was no one to attend to us. Neither the gender ministry nor the police, and the island's police had not been informed about our arrival either," the mother said.

She said that the incident had been reported to the ministry, but no action had been taken. The victim's mother alleged that the authorities were trying to cover up the case.

"Is this negligence due on their part because I do not belong to a prominent family? I am human too, a mother. A group of men have brought irrecoverable pain and humiliation on us," she said.

"The island's police are trying hard to bury the case, is it because I am an ordinary citizen? Are rights bestowed to only some in Maldives?"

The mother further said that the ministry had not contacted the victim to obtain her statement, while they remain elusive from the case.

However, the gender ministry said that the case has been reported, and all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of the child.
