A motion was submitted to the Parliament on Sunday calling for swifter delivery of justice to survivors as cases of sexual assault and rape increase in Maldives,

Adam Shareef, parliamentary representative for Madduvvari constituency, who submitted the motion called for faster investigations and to sentence those that commit these crimes in a more timely manner. It also called for a more systematic and organised approach to reduce crimes.

The motion noted that cases of sexual assault and rape have increased in Maldives to such an alarming rate that women are not safe within the country. It further noted that not enough precautionary measures were taken and when cases get reported, it takes a long time to get justice for the survivors.

Additionally, it highlighted that often cases are dropped off after a particular point in the investigation, without ever making it to a court. Hence, an environment of fear was created where people fear to step outside alone and also paved the way for these crimes to spike.

Therefore there should be a more systemic way to decrease these crimes and to ensure survivors get the justice they deserve, the motion states.

This motion was submitted after a young woman was dragged into an ally by two men had dragged who attempted to rape her on April 16. There has also been a surge in cases of sexual violence regarding children under 18.
