Maldives Police Service, on Tuesday, arrested a 28-year-old Maldivian man over sexual assault involving a 75-year-old local woman in Gan, Laamu Atoll.

Authorities reported charges were also raised for the production of sexually explicit content without consent, however, details pertaining to the specific type (video or image) and whether the allegations involved distribution, was not revealed.

According to the police, the case was reported on Saturday, and the arrest was made three days later following a court-issued order.

Further, the authorities revealed that a 15-day period was granted to investigate the allegations raised against the suspect. The questioning is set to take place in a venue yet to be determined by the Home Ministry.

Since the beginning of the year, public ire has grown considerably over the government's poor record of arresting and convicting sexual offenders, despite numerous pledges made to “protect the rights of children and women".

Protesters demanding justice for rape and sexual assault victims held demonstrations during June and July in front of Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services as well as the roads of capital Male', following an upsurge of reported cases and alleged misconduct of police during investigations.
