Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has congratulated president-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The Sri Lankan president's media division said that president Wickremesinghe called Dr. Muizzu and spoke about the importance of maintaining the long-held bilateral union between the Maldives and Lanka.
The media division said the two leaders also discussed key areas of mutual cooperation including education and health sectors.
The Sri Lankan president assured his full support to the president-elect in achieving the public's aspirations, and for the collective progress of the two nations. Wickremesinghe further said he hoped for further prosperity for the Maldives and its citizens under Dr. Muizzu's presidency.
While international leaders continue to congratulate the president-elect, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had congratulated Dr. Muizzu via X as well.
After Dr. Muizzu took victory on Saturday's runoff election, president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday, October 1, commenced government's transitional efforts.
Following the runoff election outcome, President Solih accepted defeat and congratulated Dr. Muizzu as the next Maldives president.
