Nomination of Zakariya to replace EC Vice President Habeeb proposed to parliament

President has sent the nomination of SG Zakariya to replace EC's Vice President Habeeb after the conclusion of his term on the 13th of next month.

The nomination of Elections Commission’s Secretary General, Hassan Zakariya as the replacement of the commission’s Vice Chairman, Ismail Habeeb has been sent to the parliament.

This letter, addressed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, stated that following the window for nomination opened due to Habeeb’s term as Vice Chairman of the Election’s Commission concluding on the 13th of next month, the names of candidates who applied for the position was delivered.

Amongst these candidates is the name of Hassan Zakariyya, who has been serving in the Secretary General position at the commission since the year 2021.

The Speaker has sent the case to the Committee on Independent Institutions for consideration.

The term of an Elections Commission member is five years.

Habeeb is currently serving his second term EC's Vice President. He had been working at the Elections Commission prior to his appointment as the Vice Chairman as well.
