State Trading Organisation (STO) further reduced the prices of eggs and onions on Tuesday.

With this reduction, a kilogram of onions costs MVR 11 while eggs sold separately are still priced at MVR 1.50 each.

However, the price of an egg crate has been slashed down to MVR 260 from MVR 290.

A sack of onions that were formerly sold for MVR 325 is now available for MVR 255 as well.

Potatoes are still sold at the same price as they were last week, with a sack costing MVR 250.

All the aforementioned food items are commonly used in cooking, and their demand is expected to increase for the upcoming month of Ramadan.

STO had formerly stated that potato sacks, onion sacks and egg cartons will be sold at a rate of one each per customer, although STO's godown will sell large orders for permanent customers that purchase in bulk.

The financial repercussions caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in scarcity of certain products in demand, as businesses struggle.

To control inflation rates amidst the crisis, the state has implemented certain regulations, such as putting a cap on prices for certain products.

The highest allowed pricing for a kilogram of potatoes or onions is MVR 20, while eggs cannot be sold at a cost higher than MVR 1.80 each.

Businesses that violate these regulations will be fined MVR 100,000.
