Ministry of Islamic Affairs began accepting Fitr zakat payments for the month of Ramadan on Tuesday.
A spokesperson of the ministry, Ahmed Afrah, told local media Mihaaru that zakat will be collected every working day from 0930 to 1300 hrs.
"People came to pay zakat today morning. It [the collection process] is ongoing", Afrah said.
This year's Fitr zakat collection will continue until the 29th day of Ramadan. People living in capital Male' City can pay zakat at the Islamic Ministry while residents of reclaimed suburb Hulhumale' can make the payment at the community centre.
The residents of suburb Villimale' are to pay zakat at the City Council's Villimale' Unit, while zakat is collected by the local councils of all islands across Maldives.
The monetary equivalent of the type of staple food eaten most frequently by the individual over the year must be paid as Fitr zakat.
- Normal rice: MVR 15
- Thailand white rice: MVR 45
- Basmati rice: MVR 95
- Red rice: MVR 75
- Normal flour: MVR 15

Afrah further stated that the amounts allocated for Fitr zakat would be decided by the respective island councils, since the prices at which staple foods are sold might vary from the prices in the Greater Male' region.
