Saudi Arabia gifted 50 tonnes of dates to Maldives on Tuesday, ahead of the upcoming Islamic fasting month of Ramadan.

The special gift from King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud was handed over by Matrek Abdulla M. Aldosari, the Chargé d'affaires of the Saudi Embassy in capital Male'.

Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Ahmed Zahir received the dates on behalf of the Maldivian government.

Speaking to the press afterwards, Dr Zahir stated that the government will distribute the dates among the public prior to the beginning of Ramadan.

However, he noted that the amount was not enough for the whole population of Maldives. Nevertheless, he expressed hopes that other entities will also gift dates to Maldives, assuring that such donations will also be immediately distributed.

Saudi Arabia annually gifts dates to Maldives in time for Ramadan. Some other nations in the Middle East have also made similar donations, such as the United Arab Emirates.
