Surge waves have damaged a number of houses in Shaviyani atoll Komandoo last night.
Komandoo Council said the surge waves reached the inhabited area of the island and damaged many houses. The island council said they are working along with search and rescue, the police, Maldives Transport and Contraction Company (MTCC), and volunteers from the public to save the property and goods of the people.
A local from the island that spoke to Mihaaru news said the surge waves had entered many houses last night.
“I don’t know to say how many houses [were affected]. A lot of the goods were greatly damaged. The effects of surge waves are felt in every household,” they said.
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said people from one house was moved to another last night as it was damaged beyond use for the time being. They have since moved back to their house in the morning.
“We are now determining which houses got damaged, and how they were damaged. We will only know to give details after that,” they said.
The official added the MNDF Central Area Command personnel have been installing sand bags in the houses to prevent water damage in Dhaalu atoll Kudahuvadhoo due to the heavy rain.
Authorities have been deployed in Male' City since last night as flooding in the city due to the rains is damaging homes.
