Close to 100 residences in Addu City experienced flooding due to heavy rainfall on Wednesday, December 27.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reports that a total of 97 residences on the islands of Addu City experienced flooding due to heavy rain.

The authority further said that none of the residences report significant damage warranting humanitarian aid or evacuation.

Addu atoll Feydhoo reported the highest number of cases, with 60 houses experiencing flooding, while 13 houses in Maradhoo, 10 in Hulhudhoo, and nine in Hithadhoo reported various degrees of flooding due to the rain.

Additionally, five houses from Maradhoo-Feydhoo have reported flooding with subsequent power cuts, NDMA said.

The public and relevant authorities have begun efforts to drain the water out from the residences.

"Damage assessment from the incident would be made once the water has been drained out, after reverting to general conditions," NDMA said.

Earlier, the Maldives Meteorological Center (MET Office) issued orange alerts to the southern region, inclusive of Addu and Fuvahmulah Cities, forecasting heavy rainfall.

NDMA said that despite flooding, none of the residences have suffered significant property damages.
