Male' City Mayor Shifa Mohamed declared on Wednesday that the capital's flooding issue will be solved in 2020.

In response to opposition driven criticism over the recent flooding amidst heavy rainstorms, Mayor Shifa stated that former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration concluded with the dissolution of the Maldives Road Development Corporation and that it failed to rectify the issue within Yameen's term.

According to Shifa, MVR 79 million was allocated from the 2020 state budget for the development of Male' city roads.

In order to ease congestion and challenges faced by both pedestrians and motorists, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, in November, declared his decision to conduct development projects to reform the city streets.

During Yameen's presidency, he renovated 13 major streets in the capital, with a majority of the outer ring road 'Boduthakurufaanu Magu' being tarred. However, the roads of the capital continue to flood during the rainy season.
