MET forecasts clearer weather starting Friday

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) on Thursday forecasted that the extreme weather currently experienced across Maldives will start to become clearer starting Friday.

Several major regions across the country including capital city Male' have been experiencing heavy showers since Wednesday. The extreme weather has caused flooding in Male' and several other islands.

The heavy rain also proved detrimental to many holiday-goers planning to travel to other islands during the mid-term break of schools within this week.

"The weather will start to clear from Friday onwards. By Saturday, the weather will have cleared across Maldives", said an official of MET.

According to MET, the most amount of rainfall in the 24-hour period until 0800 hours on Thursday was experienced in Kaadedhdhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, with an estimated 128 millimetres of rain.

While Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, experienced 93 millimetres of rain, there was 73 millimetres of rain in airport island Hulhule', Kaafu Atoll.

MET forecasted cloudy skies and strong winds gusting between 45-50 miles per hour during showers on Thursday.

Further, widespread rain with heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected across the country.

MET also warned of moderate seas becoming rough during showers, and possible swell wave surges during high tides.
