Maldives' journey in the CAVA Under 20 Women's Volleyball Championship tournament which kicked off yesterday in Malé started with the aim of reaching the finals during the next Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG), said Volleyball Association of Maldives (VAM)'s president Mohamed Latheef.

Latheef's comments were made last night during the opening ceremony of the CAVA Under 20 Women's Volleyball Championship.

During last night's opening match of the competition which has four teams in participation, Maldives lost to Kyrgyzstan, but despite this setback, Latheef assured the volleyball family of the country that this journey is aiming to secure at least a silver medal in both women's and men's categories in the next IOIG.

"As president of the Volleyball Association, I want to give an assurance to our volleyball family," he said.

"Today is a journey we are embarking on with strong determination. [Hopefully], the aim of this journey will [allow] our women's and men's teams to play in the finals of the 2027 Indian Ocean Island Games."

After three years, Latheef was elected as president of VAM last March. In his second term as the association's president, Latheef announced that the efforts to create a strong local volleyball league which is inclusive of the entire country has begun with Baseline Ventures, the company which designed Prime League's concept, India's largest league.
