Local broadcasting channel Raajje TV was banned from reporting on legal proceedings on Sunday.
The Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) has issued a statement banning Raajje TV from covering legal proceedings or trials in any court of law in Maldives.
DJA's decision was made following a program broadcasted by Raajje TV on October 31. The content of the program in question undermined respect for judges and the legal system.
The Supreme Court applied the prohibition having found Raajje TV in violation of regulations protecting the reputation of the courts. The prohibition will remain in effect until the investigation is concluded.
Other media stations have also previously been prohibited from reporting on trials and hearings by certain courts. However, all these media outlets were later given permission to cover legal proceedings.
