Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) overturned its previous decision to bar local broadcasting channel, Raajje TV, from reporting any court proceedings.
In November 2018, DJA issued a statement banning Raajje TV from covering legal proceedings or trials in any court of law in Maldives.
DJA's decision was made following a programme broadcast by Raajje TV on October 31. The content of the programme in question undermined respect for judges and the legal system, DJA stated.
The Supreme Court applied the prohibition having found Raajje TV in violation of regulations protecting the reputation of the courts.
At the time, DJA filed a case at Maldives Broadcasting Commission as well. However, it was ruled by the commission that Raajje TV did not violate the code of practice in broadcasting.
According to DJA, the ban is now nullified and the channel has been granted permission since Thursday.
Other media stations had also previously been prohibited from reporting trials and hearings by certain courts. However, all the outlets were later granted permission to cover legal proceedings.
