A young man on Thursday was forced to amputate his leg after a dinghy ran him over while snorkelling outside Neyo, Raa Atoll.
Maldives National Defence Force's Coast Guard transported Abdulla Haleem, 27, to capital city Male' at approximately 2340 hours on Wednesday. He was subsequently taken to ADK Hospital.
According to local media Mihaaru, Haleem's leg was nearly severed by the dinghy's propeller and was damaged beyond the possibility of reattachment.
His brother Abdulla Latheef stated that Haleem's leg was amputated below the knees and that doctors guaranteed his ability to walk again via the aid of prosthetics. Haleem is currently admitted at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is recovering.
The dinghy is operated by neighbouring developing resort Kottafaaru.
Maldives Police Service are investigating the matter.
