A thief broke into the fund box placed at one of the mosques in Ungoofaaru, Raa Atoll, on Saturday.
According to Maldives Police Service, authorities received a report of a perpetrator breaking into the fund box in 'Masjid Al-Taqwa' around 1710hrs in the evening.
However, Police reported that nothing was stolen from the fund box.
A resident from Ungoofaaru told local media Mihaaru that the perpetrator fled after the janitor caught him breaking the lock.
"There was money in the box but the amount is unknown", they said.
As per the source, the perpetrator was formerly exiled over a robbery but it has now been years since he had finished serving his sentence.
