Maldivian authorities on Saturday confirmed that nine more patients recovered from COVID-19, recording a total of 59 recoveries in the country till date.
According to Health Protection Agency (HPA), among patients that recovered include a 2-year-old belonging to the ‘Jareemaage’ cluster—the first recorded case in the capital city of Malé belonged to the same cluster.
Speaking at the daily virtual National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) press briefing, doctors from the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) noted that although they observed slower recovery rates in the country, more recoveries will be recorded in the upcoming week.
With this development, Maldives currently records 1,078 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 1,015 active cases and 4 fatalities.
Its capital Malé, one of the most densely populated cities in the world, has recorded a significant increase in COVID-19 since recording its first local transmission of the virus on April 15, involving a Maldivian woman that sought assistance from a flu clinic in Malé after developing symptoms for the virus.
The country recorded its first COVID-19 related death, of an 83-year-old local female, on April 29. Since, three more more individuals, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi man, and two local men, an 80-year-old and an 88-year-old succumbed to COVID-19.
WHO has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 4.7 million people and claimed over 313,200 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, 1.81 million people have recovered.
