Referring to Malé City as Kaafu Malé is an unconstitutional statement, said Minister of Cities and Local Governance Adam Shareef today.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) the minister said that as of recent, referring to the capital city as Kaafu (atoll) Malé is becoming common practice. However, the constitution refers to the capital of the country as Malé and not Kaafu Malé, he said.
"There is no mention of Kaafu Malé in the official government documents. Although Malé is in Kaafu atoll, Malé is not referred to as Kaafu Malé as it is the capital of the country," the minister wrote.
He went on to say that writing and saying Kaafu Malé is against the constitution. He added that this is not a trivial matter and that saying Kaafu Malé needs to be corrected.
Article 14 of the Constitution states that the sovereign city of Maldives is Malé. Kaafu Atoll is also referred to as Malé atoll.
