Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) celebrated 20 years since Qatar Airways started flying to Maldives.
Qatar Airways first started to fly to Maldives in 2001.
In a ceremony held in Velana International Airport (VIA) on Saturday, a water salute welcomed the Qatar Airway's flight that had landed. Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom had joined this ceremony to welcome the flight as well.
Minister said Qatar Airways have helped to connect Maldives to various destinations.
"A plane from Qatar Airways visited Maldives when we opened our borders last year, after closing them for Covid," Minister said.
Acting CEO of MACL Ibrahim Thoha noted the role Qatar Airways have played in ensuring Maldives receives visitors and tourists.
When Maldives reopened its borders in July Qatar Airways resumed their travels to Maldives with 21 flights per week. Later they increased the amount to 28 flights per week due to high demand. Over a thousand passengers visit Maldives daily via Qatar Airways, resulting in around approximately 36,000 travellers per month.
