President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has met with India's External Affairs Minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar today.

After their meeting in New Delhi, Minister Jaishankar in a post on social media platform X, expressed his enthusiasm stating, "Delighted to call on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu of Maldives today in New Delhi. Look forward to India and Maldives working together closely."

Jaishankar took the oath as the Minister of External Affairs in the newly formed government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was sworn in for a third consecutive term. Jaishankar held the same position during Modi’s previous term and visited the Maldives three times during that period.

President Muizzu arrived in India at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi to attend his oath taking ceremony. This marks President Muizzu's first visit to India since taking office on November 17 last year. The visit is expected to improve the strained relations between the two countries.

President Muizzu also attended an official banquet hosted by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in honor of the leaders of neighboring countries attending Modi's oath-taking ceremony. President Muizzu was seated near Prime Minister Modi at the reception, alongside Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Although ties between Maldives and India had strained following the request to remove Indian troops established Maldives, diplomatic relations between the two countries has now notably improved. With Modi's election into a third term, the messages exchanged between the Prime Minister and President Muizzu had also emphasized the dependency each country holds over the other as well as the need to fortify relations between the two countries.
