The Prosecutor General's Office has decided to withdraw the money laundering and bribery cases against Parliament Bureau Chief Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik.

Four cases of bribery and one case of money laundering were submitted in the Criminal Court against Nihan in 2019.

However, in a letter sent to Nihan last Monday, the PG Office has stated that after reviewing the case, the office has decided to drop all charges.

PG Office said that the charges against Nihan were withdrawn in reference to the Supreme Court verdict in former President Abdulla Yameen's case in 2021, which concluded that the charges against Nihan could not be proved.

PG Office clarified that although Nihan had submitted a written response this week, the decision to withdraw the charges had been made two months ago.

Nihan was recently appointed as the Bureau Chief at the Parliament Secretariat, with him commencing work just yesterday.

He was appointed by Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, as under the Parliament Service Regulations, the Speaker can appoint three individuals to assist him in his duties.

Nihan is also the former Parliamentary Group Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
