Maldives has signed on a trade and economic agreement with Türkiye.
The "Agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation Between the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Republic of Türkiye" was signed during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's official visit to the country.
The agreement was signed by Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed on behalf of the Maldives government, while Professor Dr. Omer Bolat, the Minister of Trade signed on behalf of the Turkish government. The agreement was signed in the presence of President Muizzu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Dr. Muizzu, along with a presidential delegation, as well as First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, flew to Türkiye on the invitation of Turkish President Erdoğan.
The two leaders met for official talks, after which the trade agreement was signed.
At the official talks, President Muizzu noted that the bilateral partnership between the Maldives and Türkiye is strong, and "will be expanded to new areas of cooperation" which includes trade, investment, renewable energy, and higher education.
President also expressed "profound appreciation" to the President of Türkiye and the country's people for the support extended to the Maldives in various areas of socio-economic development.
During the talks, President Erdoğan congratulated Dr. Muizzu on his election victory and being sworn-in. He also said that he and the people of Türkiye are honored that President Muizzu chose the country for his first official visit as the President of Maldives, and expressed his confidence that the visit will "help to start a new chapter in the bilateral relations" between the two countries.
Additionally, the two presidents reviewed progress in wide range of topics in bilateral cooperation between the countries and agreed on a roadmap for expanding cooperation.
