Criminal Court sentenced two individuals convicted of prostitution to jail for 4 months and 24 days. The two were apprehended seven years earlier.
The offenders, Mariyam Ashfa from Sponge-ge, Addu City Hithadhoo and Aishath Rizna from Gulisthaanuge, Noonu atoll Velidhoo, were found guilty of the offense, and sentenced to jail on Saturday last week.
Court did not disclose detailed report of its order, citing it was done to preserve the disciplinary standard of the community. The court however, noted that the two were convicted despite denying the accusations.
Criminal Court judge Hussain Faiz Rashaad delivered the sentence noting that despite denial to the charges, the court found that the evidence presented against them was sufficient to prove their guilt beyond any doubt.
The court further noted that the two were sentenced to jail adhering to both the Maldives Constitution and the Maldives Penal Code.
