The Prosecutor General’s (PG) office has said that it is in discussions to file an appeal to claim the funds from the Aarah case.
The PG is seeking the USD 1 million in bribes the former President Abdulla Yameen accepted and the USD 2.4 million investment back to the state.
While PG confirmed it was only discussing to claim the funds from the Aarah lease transaction, it has not formally decided to file for an appeal.
Yameen was found guilty of accepting a bribe of USD 1 million in the Vaavu atoll Aarah lease case. He was also convicted of the money laundering charges against him. Yameen was sentenced to jail for 11 years and a USD 5 million fine by Maldives Criminal Court last week.
The former Felidhoo MP Yoosuf Naeem was convicted of bribing in the case. He is facing a jail term of three years and two months.
The former president has now become ineligible to run in the 2023 Presidential Election following his guilty verdict and lengthy jail sentence.
