The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has filed a total of five charges against Ali Saahil, 23, for the murder of Shiau Mohamed Saeed, 22.
Shiau, a local musician, was killed and dismembered in an apartment in Malé, on August 6. Local authorities arrested Ali Saahil, a professional skateboarder, at the scene of the crime. Saahil was placed under remand until the end of his trial.
The PGO filed five charges against Saahil; however, the state publicly disclosed only three of these charges. They include murder with intent using a sharp object, possession of pornographic material, and the use of cannabis.
The remaining charges were not revealed, claiming it was to protect the rights of the victim’s family.
It has been over four months since Shiau's murder. The police said earlier that there was a delay in filing charges because they were unable to establish a clear motive for the murder. While the suspect responded to specific questions that the police asked, he had refused to divulge any details regarding the disturbing murder, the police said.
According to the police, the autopsy confirmed that Shiau was murdered, and that her body was desecrated after her death.
The authorities continued to extend Saahil’s remand every 15 days until the investigation concluded.
