STELCO has launched a Wave Monitoring Project to explore the potential for generating energy from ocean waves.

Stelco Managing Director Hussain Fahmy said in a post on social media platform X that the project aims to to propel Maldives toward President Dr. Muizzu’s 33 percent renewable energy goal, expanding sustainable power beyond solar sources.

"This project involves rigorous data collection and analysis to understand the potential of ocean waves as a viable energy source for the nation," Fahmy said.

He said the company aims to build a more resilient and reliable energy grid using wave energy.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to make 33 percent of Maldives energy generation renewable by 2028 to reduce the country's reliance on fuel.
