Villa College has kicked off a symposium focused on international law.

The symposium is designed to raise awareness about international law within the country, addressing and discussing judicial issues. Lawyers, law firms, and NGOs from various countries contribute to the symposium, providing a diverse perspective on both local and international legal matters.

The symposium, consisting of forty participants, will run for two days. A total of 22 presentations and 17 papers will be presented at the symposium.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the symposium, College Vice Rector Dr. Ali Najeeb emphasized that with the increasing number of law firms serving clients of multinational companies in the country and the rise in foreign investment, there is a need for education programs related to international law and foreign affairs.

"There are many law students in the country, and they should be encouraged to study in various legal fields. We are trying to add a new program to our Faculty of Sharia and Law next year. The program focuses on international law and foreign affairs," he said.

UN Resident Coordinator in Maldives, Catherine Haswell, commended Villa College's efforts to enhance the legal sector in the country. She said that the symposium is a testimony to the efforts being made to enhance understanding in the field and to increase familiarity with the sector in the country.

Catherine stated that the symposium will connect the international legal community with the legal community in the Maldives, and country will be able to reap the benefits of this relationship.

This symposium marks the first of its kind on international law in the Maldives and represents the college's second law symposium this year.

The international event is organized in collaboration with The Human Rights Centre, the University of Essex in the UK, and MM Shankarrao Chavan Law College in India.
