Houses in Addu evacuated over flooding

Several houses in Addu City were evacuated following two days of heavy rain which caused widespread flooding in residential districts.

Mayor of Addu City Abdulla Sodiq revealed to local media Mihaaru that efforts were underway to evacuate around six houses. He added that arrangements were also being made for the residents of houses in which kitchens could not be used.

The mayor stated that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Police, private companies and several civilians are participating in relief efforts.

According to the police, assistance was provided to 140 residences in Addu. The figure includes 44 houses in Hithadhoo, 12 houses in Maradhoo Feydhoo, 43 houses in Feydhoo, 10 houses in Hulhudhoo, 27 houses in Meedhoo and four houses in Maradhoo.

However, 28 houses remain in need of assistance. The police are working to extend aid to these residences and families.

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) revealed that Addu received 107 millimetres of rainfall between 2000 hrs on October 11 and 0600 hrs on October 12.
