The state has announced the introduction of a new allowance for principals stationed and working outside of their home island.

Principals who are entitled to the allowance will receive a sum of MVR 7,000 per month.

The Ministry of Education tweeted that the allowance was introduced under the "Rural Retention Policy", which was detailed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih earlier on Thursday, September 21.

President Solih said that the revision was made after relevant discussions with principals of various schools who were stationed out of their home islands.

The ministry added policy details were shared with all the principals entitled to the allowance.

While special allowances were subject to school principals stationed outside of their home islands, the policy was annulled in 2022 following the implementation of the new employment framework.

Previously, principals working outside of their home islands received an allowance of MVR 9,000.

A principal who was working away from his native island said that renting out accommodation in islands with local tourism activities was costly.

They further said that several of these principals would refuse being stationed out of their home island if the ministry did not arrange accommodation for them.

Pay Commission said it harmonised the remuneration of principals by including their living allowances.
