Member of Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) Zeena Zahir, resigned on Wednesday, after relevant authorities came to a decision over her allegedly neglecting responsibilities and differentiating between media outlets.

The Parliamentary Committee on Independent Bodies voted on dismissing Zeena regarding the unfair treatment shown by Broadcom during her membership to certain media, throughout former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration.

Following the Parliament's decision, she wrote a letter addressed to incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, rejecting the committee’s conclusion, claiming that the committee had failed to investigate her case thoroughly.

Regarding her disciplinary issues of punctuality and absence, Zeena stated that there was no system in place to record the attendance for Broadcom’s meetings.

She further asserted that, during the four years of working in Broadcom, she had only been late to one meeting, in addition to taking a total of three off days.

In her letter, she stood by the decision made by Broadcom in 2018 to temporarily withhold Raajje TV’s license while the country was under a State of Emergency, iterating her belief that it was the best possible decision at the time.

At the time of her resignation, Zeena only has five months remaining for the completion of her term.

In addition to Zeena, the Parliament also decided on dismissing various other members of Broadcom in 2019. However, all of them resigned prior to the forwarding the motion to the Parliament floor.
