Land reclamation and beach filling project at Meemu atoll Dhiggaru has once again commenced.

Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who is currently visiting the atoll, affirmed land reclamation of Dhiggaru will conclude within a month.

President Solih made the remarks at the closing ceremony of the island's shore protection project.

While 17 hectares of land have been reclaimed under the project, President Solih assures another 8 hectares will be reclaimed in the weeks to follow. The project fell into an unprecedented interruption after Maldives Transport and Contracting Company's (MTCC) dredger; "Mahaa Jarraaf" ran into mechanical hindrances.

However, the contractor reports the project has recommenced after the issue with the dredger was resolved.

After the reclamation which will cover 25 hectares in total, the land area of Dhiggaru will increase to 39 hectares. This marks nearly thrice the increment on the original land area.

President Solih further said the land reclamation initiative in Dhiggaru will resolve the issue of ocean floods.

"Breakwater structures have been developed in an area of 700 meters to obstruct ocean waves breaking into the islands," President Solih said.

The shore protection project cost a total of MVR 27 million. Project aspects, apart from land reclamation, included beach filling, breakwater construction and revetment.

President Solih further confirmed fresh water supplying capacity in the island will be increased from 37 metric tons to 50 metric tons.
